The Basics of Exotic Pet Care

Getting started in the world of exotic pets can seem daunting...

Which is why we're here to try and show you just how easy it can be!

What is an exotic pet?

Loosely, an exotic pet is considered to be anything non-native. However a lot of animals we think of as not being exotic would fall into this category, for example, hamsters and gerbils.

We mostly think of exotic pets to be one of the following:

  • A reptile
  • An amphibian
  • An invertebrate
  • A bird/avian
  • Some mammalian species
  • Aquatic pets

Where do I get started?

Like non-exotic pets, each animal has individual care needs that you need to meet. These might be as simple as an aquarium with a filter, light and heater, or go so far as a walk-in vivarium that takes up a room in your house to care for a Crocodile monitor.

Each type of pet will need copious amounts of research from a diverse array of resources. Some recommended resources will be at the bottom of this page. But there are a few that can be grouped together that have similar needs:

  • Reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates
  • Birds/avians
  • Aquatic pets

We won't really be addressing mammalian needs in this as the care requirements can be so wildly different. Caring for a gerbil versus a meerkat offers wildly different challenges!
